VTB Suffers Powerful DDoS Attack
VTB Bank has reported that its technological infrastructure is under an “unprecedented cyberattack from abroad.” According to the company, this attack is not only the largest of the year but also the most significant in the bank’s history. Users may experience issues with the mobile apps and the web version of “VTB Online.”
The bank emphasizes that its systems are operating normally and that customer data is protected from external interference, as it is stored within the internal perimeter of the bank’s technological infrastructure.
“During the ongoing efforts to counteract the hackers targeting the bank’s external systems, our specialists are doing everything necessary and possible to ensure that clients do not experience discomfort when using our services. However, while countermeasures are being implemented, temporary difficulties with the functionality of banking apps and the VTB Online web version may occasionally occur. We apologize for this situation and hope for your understanding.
Analysis of the DDoS attack indicates that it is planned and large-scale. Its goal is to inconvenience the bank’s clients by disrupting banking services,” states VTB’s official press release.
Source of the Attack and Bank’s Response
The bank also reports that most of the malicious requests to its services originated from foreign segments of the internet. However, there is particular concern about the presence of harmful traffic from Russian IP addresses.
“We do not rule out that some of these Russian addresses may have been involved in the attack as a result of cyber fraud. All identified Russian IP addresses will be handed over to law enforcement agencies for investigation, as organizing or participating in a DDoS attack is a criminal offense,” the bank’s representatives wrote.
