VPN Service Outages Continue for Russian Users

Users in Russia are continuing to report disruptions in the operation of VPN services such as OpenVPN, WireGuard, and Terona. Customers of major mobile operators—including MegaFon, MTS, Tele2, Yota, Tinkoff Mobile, and Beeline—have confirmed these outages. However, large fixed-line providers like Rostelecom do not appear to be affected by the issue.

According to Terona’s support team, the difficulties are linked to “another wave of Roskomnadzor blockades.” The agency itself has not commented on the situation.

Impact on Multiple Sectors

Technical experts from Roskomsvoboda note that these restrictions are impacting many industries, including logistics, IT, and banking. “These blockades show how quickly and easily such actions can be implemented. Blocking all VPNs is possible, but it’s unlikely to happen quickly. Therefore, it’s wise to use services that offer traffic obfuscation (a method to hide VPN traffic) and are committed to remaining accessible in countries with censorship. Examples include Red Shield VPN, Amnezia VPN, and Xeovo VPN. Don’t forget about Psiphon, Lantern, and Tor as well,” the experts advise.

Potential for Further Restrictions

Roskomsvoboda experts also suggest that the authorities’ next step could be to block Shadowsocks, a non-standard protocol originally created to bypass China’s Great Firewall, along with similar tools.
