Universal Digital Car Key Unveiled at CES 2025

At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Keyvault introduced a groundbreaking technology that promises to change the way we interact with our vehicles. The K1 device transforms your smartphone into a universal car key, eliminating the need to carry physical keys. This compact gadget, priced at $519 (or $379 for pre-orders), is compatible with any car sold in the United States since 2008.

With the Keyvault app, drivers can not only unlock and start their cars but also track the vehicle’s location, monitor engine status, check fuel levels, and even share access with other users. This is especially convenient for parents who want to monitor their children’s driving or for car rental companies managing multiple vehicles.

According to Keyvault CEO Artem Kiyashchenko, “K1 offers unprecedented control, convenience, and security. It’s a small device that turns any car into a smart car.”

Security Concerns and Features

As keyless car access becomes more popular, there has also been a rise in thefts using similar technologies. Since 2022, criminals have increasingly used so-called “relay attacks” to intercept signals between devices and vehicles. Keyvault claims to protect against such threats by using ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, multi-factor authentication, and “military-grade encryption.”

However, experts warn of potential risks. Researchers note that even with UWB, there is still a chance of a successful relay attack. Additional vulnerabilities could arise from bugs in the Keyvault app or if a smartphone with the app installed is lost.

Possible risks include hacking the company’s servers, theft of user data, or remote access to vehicles. Social engineering attacks, where criminals pose as Keyvault support staff, also remain a serious threat.

Looking Ahead

Despite these concerns, the K1 represents a promising solution that could transform how drivers interact with their cars—provided the outlined risks can be minimized.
