Ukrainian Internet Provider Triolan Hacked Twice by Cybercriminals

Triolan, Major Ukrainian Internet Provider, Hacked Twice

Triolan, a major Ukrainian internet provider, was hacked twice by cybercriminals, according to sources cited by Forbes. The first breach occurred on February 24, 2022, and the second on March 9, 2022.

“Engineers are currently working to restore internet access,” a Triolan representative reported. Three other sources within the company, as well as a former co-founder, confirmed the cyberattacks. Additionally, some of Triolan’s internal computers stopped working because the attackers reset them to factory settings. Restoring the computer systems proved difficult, as in some cases, specialists needed physical access, which was impossible due to ongoing fighting in the city.

According to company representatives, “key network nodes” were compromised, and some routers could not be restored. As of now, 70% of the nodes in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Odesa, Rivne, and Zaporizhzhia have been restored.

Various outages across Ukraine were also caused by the physical destruction of infrastructure. In the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, there were “serious internet disruptions” due to downtime at the providers Ukrtelecom and Volia.
