Hackers Reveal UK Expenditures on Fighting “Kremlin Propaganda”
The international hacker collective Anonymous has announced that it gained access to files from the UK Foreign Office. According to the hackers, these documents reveal that the United Kingdom is spending a significant amount of money to combat so-called “Kremlin propaganda.”
Details of the Leaked Information
Based on the information obtained by the hackers, the UK government allocates 20% of the country’s total budget to fight “Kremlin propaganda and disinformation.” This was discovered in files from the Counter Disinformation & Media Development Programme (CDMD), a department responsible for combating disinformation in the media. The CDMD reportedly works in cooperation with British intelligence agencies.
Published Documents and Recommendations
The hackers even published a photo of an alleged document containing recommendations for young Russian-speaking individuals on how to communicate with their relatives. According to Anonymous, the department received £100 million in funding for its operations in 2017.
