Tor Browser 11 Released with New Interface and V2 Support Dropped
The Tor ProjectThe Tor Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting online privacy and ensuring uncensored access to the internet. Emerging from U.S. Naval Research Lab experiments with onion routing in the 1990s, Tor evolved into a decentralized, volunteer-powered network that hides user identities by routing traffic through multiple encrypted relays. Since the launch of the Tor Browser in 2008, it has become a crucial tool for activists, journalists, and everyday users worldwide—supporting free expression during events like the Arab Spring and proving resilient in the face of mass surveillance disclosures. Today, Tor is sustained by a global community committed to human rights, transparency, and digital freedom. More developers have released Tor Browser version 11.0, featuring a new interface and the discontinuation of support for the second generation of onion routing (V2). This move is expected to improve user privacy.

What’s New in Tor Browser 11
- Tor Browser 11 is now based on Firefox ESR version 91, allowing users to enjoy an updated interface with new icons, a redesigned toolbar, menus, dialogs, and tab appearance.
- The most significant change is the end of support for second-generation onion routing (V2). The browser no longer recognizes TOR links that use short, 16-character hostnames.
- If you try to open a V2 address, Tor Browser will display the message “Invalid Onionsite Address” and show an error with code 0xF6.
Bug Fixes and Improvements
- Developers have fixed several bugs in Tor 11, including font rendering issues, missing functionality on macOS, and crashes when private browsing mode is enabled.
