Sberbank Reports Data Breach Affecting 65 Million Russians Since February 24

Sberbank: Data of 65 Million Russians Leaked Online Since February 24

According to Stanislav Kuznetsov, Deputy Chairman of the Board at Sberbank, the personal data of 65 million Russians has been leaked online as a result of cyberattacks since February 24. He shared this information at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). Of the total, 1 million records were related specifically to Sberbank, while 12 million affected other banks. Financial institutions suffered losses of 4.5 billion rubles due to the reissuing of compromised cards.

Kuznetsov described the scale of the hacker attacks as a “full-scale cyberwar,” noting that the bank identified between 300,000 and 330,000 individuals participating in these attacks. According to him, the number of cyberattacks on businesses increased at least 15 times after the start of the “military operation.” The main targets were the financial, energy, and oil and gas sectors, as well as airlines, logistics companies, online retailers, and media outlets. As a result of DDoS attacks, services at 87 major organizations were blocked for an hour or more.

Researchers from Check Point Software and CyberProof estimated in March that about 400,000 hackers from various countries were participating in attacks on Ukraine’s side. For the first time in history, volunteers from around the world joined an open cyberwar. In the spring, personal data of users from several major companies and services—including Yandex.Eats, Delivery Club, CDEK, VTB, Wildberries, and others—appeared online. In early June, the website of the Ministry of Construction was also targeted by a hacker attack.

Earlier, Vitaly Terentyev, head of the job search service HeadHunter, predicted that around 100,000 Russian companies would face difficulties finding cybersecurity specialists due to a shortage in the labor market.
