Russian Hacker Breaches Payment Terminal from Prison

A hacker in Russia managed to steal over 35,000 rubles from a payment terminal while serving time in prison, according to the Orsk.ru portal.

The 29-year-old hacker, who was incarcerated in one of the correctional colonies in the Ivanovo region, stole 35,300 rubles from a payment terminal located in Orsk. He accomplished this crime with the help of an accomplice whom he found through an online advertisement.

The hacker’s accomplice installed a program on the terminal to enable remote access. The inmate then hacked into the terminal using a smartphone.

Law enforcement identified the hacker after he was released from prison. He confessed to the crime and entered into a pre-trial agreement with investigators.

The Soviet District Court of Orsk sentenced the man to 1 year and 7 months in a high-security penal colony, followed by 6 months of restricted freedom. The criminal case against his accomplice is currently under review by the court.
