Russia Tops List of Countries Hit Hardest by Cryptocurrency Threats

Russia Leads in Cryptocurrency Threats, Says Eset

Russia has been named the country most affected by cryptocurrency-related threats, according to a report from the international antivirus software developer Eset.

Based on Eset’s data, Russia accounted for 8.9% of all recorded attacks this year. Thailand and Peru followed, with 5.6% and 5.3% of attacks, respectively.

Global Increase in Crypto Malware

This year, the amount of detected malicious software in this category worldwide has increased by 18.6%. Eset experts believe this surge is linked to the rising value of cryptocurrencies, making them an attractive target for criminals.

Favorable Conditions for Hackers

The hype around cryptocurrencies has created favorable conditions for hackers to develop fake apps and exchanges. Alexey Govyadov, Head of Analytics and Automation at Eset Russia, explained that many people now download the first app they see with the word β€œcrypto” in its name, without paying much attention to details. Inexperienced investors often invest small amounts, which also benefits scammers, since the likelihood of a serious investigation over a lost $10 is low.

Staying Safe

  • Be cautious when downloading cryptocurrency-related apps.
  • Verify the legitimacy of exchanges and applications before using them.
  • Invest only through trusted platforms and avoid sharing personal information with unknown sources.

As the popularity and value of cryptocurrencies continue to grow, so does the risk of cyber threats. Users are advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their assets.
