Russia Among Top 5 Countries for Android Malware
Experts from the antivirus company ESET have analyzed the spread of malicious software targeting Android devices and identified the countries where such cyber threats are most common. According to their findings, Russia is among the top five countries affected.
The analysis covered the period from May to August 2021. During this time, experts observed a 32.6% increase in the number of Android malware threats compared to the beginning of the year.
Countries with the Highest Android Malware Activity
The report highlights a surge in Android malware activity in Ukraine, Mexico, India, and Brazil, with Russia also making the top five list.
Significant Growth in Banking Malware
According to the experts, there was a particularly sharp increase in malicious banking apps for Android, which grew by an impressive 200% since the start of 2021. Downloads of the Android trojan TrojanDropper.Agent by Russian users rose by 18.4%.
Other Malware Trends
- Spyware incidents increased by 71%.
- Adware and various advertising apps grew by 63%.
- Interestingly, there was a decline in the number of cryptominers (down 14.3%) and ransomware programs (down 7.7%).
These findings highlight the growing threat of Android malware, especially in the banking sector, while some types of threats like cryptominers and ransomware have seen a decrease.
