Raspberry Pi 5 Officially Announced
After more than four years since the release of the Raspberry Pi 4, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has unveiled the next-generation Raspberry Pi 5. The new board will go on sale at the end of October, priced at $60 for the 4GB RAM version and $80 for the 8GB RAM version. For comparison, the Raspberry Pi 4 was sold at $35 for 2GB RAM, $55 for 4GB RAM, and $75 for 8GB RAM. The Raspberry Pi 5 is claimed to deliver 2-3 times the performance of the Raspberry Pi 4.
Specifications
- SoC: Broadcom BCM2712 2.4GHz with a quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU. Manufactured using a 16nm process, it supports cryptographic acceleration, features a 512KB L2 cache per core, and a shared 2MB L3 cache. The chip is custom-designed for the Raspberry Pi 5 and delivers workstation-level performance. The board uses a chiplet design concept. For comparison, the Raspberry Pi 4 used a BCM2711 SoC with a quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A72 CPU, 28nm process, and 1.5GHz clock speed.
- GPU: VideoCore VII at 800MHz, supporting OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2 graphics APIs (the Raspberry Pi 4 had VideoCore VI).
- Display Output: Two Micro HDMI ports with HDR and 4Kp60 support on both ports simultaneously. Fully open-source drivers for Mesa will be available from launch. The Raspberry Pi 4 supported 4Kp60 on one port or 4Kp30 on two ports.
- Video Decoder: Built-in hardware decoder for HEVC/H.265 video, supporting 4Kp60 playback.
- RAM: 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM. Memory performance is more than double that of the Raspberry Pi 4 (4267MT/s vs. 2000MT/s). A 16GB version is expected in the future.
- Wi-Fi: 802.11ac with support for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.
- Bluetooth: 5.0 / Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
- Storage: microSD slot with high-speed SDR104 mode support.
- USB Ports: Two USB 3.0 ports (5Gbps) and two USB 2.0 ports.
- Ethernet: Gigabit Ethernet with Power over Ethernet (PoE) support.
- MIPI Transceivers: Two 4-lane MIPI transceivers for camera and display (combined MIPI CSI/DSI connector).
- PCIe: One PCIe 2.0 slot (uses a non-standard connector to fit the compact form factor).
- Power: 5V/5A via USB-C. Due to increased power consumption, older Raspberry Pi power supplies may not be sufficient; a 27W power supply is recommended. It is also advised to use a case with an active cooling fan.
- GPIO: Standard 40-pin GPIO header.
- RTC: Real-time clock with a separate battery.
- Power Button: Dedicated power button included.
- Form Factor: The board size and form factor remain unchanged and are compatible with previous “B” models of Raspberry Pi.
Operating System and Availability
The Raspberry Pi 5 will support the upcoming release of Raspberry Pi OS based on Debian 12, which is expected to be available in mid-October.
