PickPoint Parcel Lockers Suffer Hacker Attack
At the end of last week, unknown individuals disrupted the operation of the PickPoint parcel locker network. Due to the attack, many lockers opened their compartments, making the stored parcels accessible to anyone. Numerous photos of this incident quickly began circulating on social media.
According to the company’s press service, the incident occurred because of an attack on the internet providers that supply connectivity to the parcel lockers (specifically, mobile operators). PickPoint reports that a total of 2,732 parcel lockers were affected by the attack, but the rest of the company’s network (about 8,000 locations) continued to operate normally.
Restoration work, which required company engineers to visit the affected lockers in person, was expected to be completed by today, December 7, 2020.
Company Response and Investigation
To investigate the incident, the company established an emergency response team that included both internal and external experts.
“The attack was detected at an early stage, so most of the 2,732 terminals were able to be disconnected, and the orders were not affected,” the company assures. “PickPoint reaffirms its commitment to protecting the interests of its recipients and customers. We are doing everything necessary to minimize the damage caused by cybercriminals.”
On Saturday, the company’s CEO, Nadezhda Romanova, told journalists from the “Rossiya-24” TV channel that some parcels were indeed stolen from certain terminals.
“Of course, we will compensate all losses to the owners of the parcels that were lost, meaning there will be a 100% reimbursement for all affected orders,” Romanova emphasized.
