Over 200 International Musicians Sign Open Letter Opposing AI in the Music Industry

The non-profit organization Artist Rights Alliance, which advocates for musicians’ rights, has published an open letter addressing the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the music industry. Among the signatories are Jon Bon Jovi, Imagine Dragons, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish, Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, and many others.

The musicians express concern that some industry players are using AI to “sabotage” and “undermine the reputation” of performers, songwriters, and rights holders. For example, companies sometimes train algorithms on artists’ music without their permission, which affects the royalties that creators receive. In the future, there is even a risk that artists could be completely replaced by AI.

The letter states that the “irresponsible” use of artificial intelligence threatens the privacy and individuality of artists, as well as their music and income. At the same time, the musicians acknowledge the enormous potential of these technologies, which can serve as a source of inspiration and help foster new creative experiences.

The authors of the letter urge developers and digital music services not to create or use generative AI technologies. However, they are not calling for stricter regulation. Instead, the music industry is asking technology companies to collaborate in order to eliminate irresponsible practices, preserve the quality of music, and protect jobs.
