Internet and Mobile Service Shut Down in Iran Amid Protests

Internet and Mobile Networks Shut Down in Iran

According to Al Arabiya and several other Arab media outlets, Iranian authorities almost completely shut down internet access across the country on Saturday in response to protests that erupted in several cities over rising gasoline prices. Reports received on Sunday indicated that the internet in Iran remained inaccessible and was not expected to be restored for at least another 24 hours.

A representative from Iran’s Ministry of Communications confirmed that the internet had been disconnected nationwide. He stated that the decision was made by order of the Supreme National Security Council. The official added that internet access would be restored once the Supreme National Security Council issues the appropriate directive.

Arab media noted that the internet shutdown in Iran began on Saturday amid widespread protests in several cities related to the increase in gasoline prices.

The U.S. State Department condemned the Iranian authorities’ attempt to cut off internet access during the protests. This was announced by State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus on Twitter.
