Instagram to Let Users Download Their Data Archives

Instagram to Introduce Data Download Feature for Users

Instagram is developing a tool that will allow users to download copies of all the information from their profiles, according to TechCrunch. This data download feature will work similarly to Facebook’s “Download Your Information” function—Facebook is the parent company of Instagram.

“We are building a new data portability tool. Soon, you’ll be able to download a copy of everything you’ve shared on Instagram, including your photos, videos, and messages,” a company representative stated.

It is not yet clear whether photos will be available in their original resolution or only in a compressed format. Instagram has promised to share more details soon.

Why Is Instagram Adding This Feature?

Data portability is one of the requirements of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which goes into effect on May 25. This is expected to help users control the amount of information companies hold about them. It may also encourage the growth of competing social networks, as users will be able to leave a platform without worrying about losing their old photos and other data.

Recent Changes to Instagram’s API

Previously, it was reported that Instagram had restricted developers’ access to its API, which they used to collect user data.
