Hackers Steal Data of 150 Million MyFitnessPal Users
Hackers have stolen the data of more than 150 million users of the MyFitnessPal fitness app, which is used for calorie tracking as well as creating workout and nutrition plans, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The attack occurred at the end of February 2018, but Under Armour, the company that owns the service, only recently discovered the breach. The attackers did not gain access to payment card details, driver’s license numbers, or Social Security numbers. However, they were able to obtain users’ names, email addresses, and encrypted passwords.
“Email addresses are valuable to spammers because it’s known that these addresses belong to active, real users. Typically, such data is sold for high prices on the dark web,” said Engin Kirda, a cybersecurity expert and professor at Northeastern University in Boston.
Immediately after news of the breach broke, Under Armour’s stock dropped by 4.6%. The company is currently conducting an investigation in cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
