French Hospital Targeted in Major Ransomware Attack
The Centre Hospitalier Sud Francilien (CHSF), a large medical center located 28 kilometers from central Paris and serving a population of 600,000, has fallen victim to a significant hacker attack. As a result of the breach, CHSF has been forced to redirect patients to other medical facilities and postpone scheduled surgeries.
According to an official statement from the hospital’s management, “Due to the attack on CHSF’s computer network, the hospital’s business software, storage systems (including those for medical images), and the information system related to patient admissions are temporarily unavailable.”
Impact on Patient Care
The technical details of the incident have not been disclosed, but the disruption caused by the attack is ongoing. Patients in need of emergency care are still being examined by CHSF doctors, but if diagnostic imaging is required, they are being sent to other medical centers.
Ransom Demand and Investigation
According to the French newspaper Le Monde, which cites sources in local law enforcement, the attackers have demanded a ransom of $10,000,000 from the hospital administration in exchange for a decryption key.
The case has been handed over to the Paris gendarmerie, specifically to specialists from the Center for Combating Cybercrime (C3N). It is suspected that ransomware groups such as LockBit 3.0 or Rangar Locker may be behind the attack, as C3N experts typically handle incidents involving these groups. However, it is worth noting that LockBit 3.0 explicitly forbids its “partners” and affiliates from attacking and encrypting the systems of healthcare providers.
