France Prohibits Drone Use in Paris
The French authorities have banned the use of drones in Paris for monitoring people after the end of the lockdown. The decision was made by the French Council of State, which called on government agencies to “immediately” stop using drones in the capital for surveillance purposes.
According to France Info radio, restrictions that were put in place during the coronavirus pandemic began to be lifted on May 11. As a result, schools, clothing stores, hair salons, beauty salons, and other businesses started reopening.
“The Council of State believes, as we have argued, that this involves the processing of personal data, which is not regulated in any way,” said Patrice Spinosi, a representative of the civil rights group La Quadrature du Net.
According to Spinosi, the Council’s ruling has already taken effect and will soon be extended throughout the entire country.
In order for authorities to use drones for monitoring citizens, they will need to obtain a regulation governing their use, adopted after a review by the Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL), or equip the drones with technical devices that prevent the identification of individuals being filmed.
