EXMO Crypto Exchange Hacked, About 5% of Funds Stolen
The British cryptocurrency exchange EXMO has reported that unknown hackers have stolen nearly 5% of its assets by compromising its hot wallets. According to EXMO’s official statistics, the exchange’s daily trading volume is 2,273 BTC (almost $52,000,000), and the number of active traders is 27,795.
EXMO representatives stated that on December 21, 2020 (2:27:02 UTC), suspicious and large-scale withdrawal operations were detected. As a result, all withdrawals on the exchange have been temporarily suspended, and users are being asked not to deposit funds for the time being.
“We are still investigating the incident, but so far, a security audit has shown that certain amounts in BTC, XRP, ZEC, USDT, ETC, and ETH were withdrawn from the exchange’s hot wallets. The affected hot wallets contained about 5% of all assets. We emphasize that all assets in cold wallets are safe,” the company’s statement reads.
EXMO also announced that all losses suffered by affected users will be fully covered and reimbursed by the exchange.
The incident is being investigated in cooperation with the London police and EXMO’s own cybercrime team. The exchange has promised to conduct a “thorough security review” of all systems and data and is actively working to determine the cause of the breach.
