ESET: Only 9% of Users Choose Legal Content

According to a study conducted by ESET in September 2019, most users prefer pirated content over licensed content. Respondents were asked two questions, each allowing for multiple answers. When asked, β€œWhat type of content do you pirate most often?”, many users selected more than one type of content.

  • 52% of respondents download cracked games
  • 43% watch unlicensed movies and TV shows
  • 34% listen to music through illegal services more frequently
  • 14% download books from pirate sites
  • 19% usually install cracked software

Only 9% of internet users always pay for a license.

Why Do Users Avoid Legal Content?

The second question focused on the reasons that prevent people from using legal content. The main factors cited were:

  • High price (75%)
  • Limited selection on legal services (34%)
  • Inconvenient payment systems (16%)

Additionally, a quarter of internet users refuse to pay for a license for ideological reasons.
