ESET: Only 9% of Users Choose Legal Content
According to a study conducted by ESET in September 2019, most users prefer pirated content over licensed content. Respondents were asked two questions, each allowing for multiple answers. When asked, βWhat type of content do you pirate most often?β, many users selected more than one type of content.
- 52% of respondents download cracked games
- 43% watch unlicensed movies and TV shows
- 34% listen to music through illegal services more frequently
- 14% download books from pirate sites
- 19% usually install cracked software
Only 9% of internet users always pay for a license.
Why Do Users Avoid Legal Content?
The second question focused on the reasons that prevent people from using legal content. The main factors cited were:
- High price (75%)
- Limited selection on legal services (34%)
- Inconvenient payment systems (16%)
Additionally, a quarter of internet users refuse to pay for a license for ideological reasons.
