Dutch Police Post Warnings to Hackers on Cybercrime Forums

The Dutch police have published warnings on popular Russian- and English-language hacker forums (RaidForums and XSS), stating that “setting up criminal infrastructure in the Netherlands is a hopeless endeavor.”

These messages were posted following the recent takedown of the Emotet botnet, in which the Dutch police played a key role. Authorities in the Netherlands seized two out of three Emotet command servers, both located within the country.

In their messages, law enforcement officials urged forum members not to abuse Dutch hosting providers for botnets or other criminal activities, emphasizing that such efforts are futile. The police promised to continue seizing criminal infrastructure and included an informational video with their posts, which ended with the words: “Everyone makes mistakes. We’re waiting for yours.”

Forum Reactions

Interestingly, the RaidForums administration did not remove the police post, although forum members responded with insults and questioned its authenticity. Meanwhile, the Russian-language XSS forum deleted the message, blocked the Dutch police account, and posted a warning in the profile to caution other users against trusting that account.

Active Fight Against Cybercrime in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is known for its active fight against cybercrime. For example, Dutch police have:

  • Shut down 15 DDoS services in a single week;
  • Forced the closure of hosting company KV Solutions BV, whose servers and backend infrastructure were used to host numerous IoT botnets;
  • Shut down the encrypted mobile network Ennetcom;
  • And cracked encrypted messages on a server confiscated from Ennetcom.
