Crypto-Related Court Cases in Russia Surge by 72% Over Two Years

Significant Increase in Crypto-Related Court Cases in Russia

Over the past two years, the number of court cases in Russia related to cryptocurrency has risen sharply, increasing from 510 cases in 2021 to 2,653 cases in 2023. This marks a 72% growth, according to a report by the Moscow Digital School, an educational platform specializing in digital and business law, in collaboration with the law firm EBR.

More than half of these court proceedings were bankruptcy disputes. The study highlights that the majority of legal conflicts involving cryptocurrency in Russia are connected to bankruptcy cases, reflecting the growing complexity and integration of digital assets in financial matters.

Experts Predict Further Growth

Researchers anticipate that the number of crypto-related court cases will continue to rise in the near future. Kristina Mkrtchyan, an intellectual property advisor at EBR, commented, β€œThe projected increase in cryptocurrency-related court cases in the near future reflects both the expansion of the crypto economy and the growing complexity of legal issues associated with it. This requires the legal system to be flexible and adapt to new realities, and for legal professionals to continually update their knowledge and understanding of technological and economic changes in the field of cryptocurrencies.”
