Car2Go Loses Hundreds of Luxury Mercedes-Benz Vehicles to Fraudsters
The car-sharing service Car2Go has lost hundreds of luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicles due to fraudulent activity. The Chicago Police Department has arrested more than a dozen individuals suspected of stealing these high-end cars from Car2Go, a company that offers various vehicle rental services.
According to CBS Chicago, the perpetrators allegedly exploited the Car2Go mobile app. However, the company has denied reports of a technical breach, stating instead that the incident was a case of fraud. The exact method used by the criminals to steal the vehicles remains unknown. It appears that the issue is currently limited to Chicago.
Local police are actively working to recover the stolen vehicles. CBS Chicago reports that many of the stolen cars were used in the commission of other crimes. A police spokesperson told The Verge that law enforcement has detained 16 suspects in connection with the thefts.
“We received a report from a car rental company indicating that some vehicles may have been fraudulently or deceptively rented through their mobile app. Several vehicles have already been recovered, and suspects are being questioned,” the police statement said.
As a result of the thefts, Car2Go has temporarily suspended its service in Chicago. The company emphasizes that this was not a hack, but a case of fraud isolated to the Chicago area. Car2Go also assures customers that no personal or confidential client information was compromised during the incident.
