AI Program Assists Russian Investigators in Tracking Serial Killers
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has implemented a new program based on artificial intelligence to help identify serial criminals. This was reported to Izvestia by Alexey Bessonov, head of the Research Institute of Forensic Science at the Investigative Committee of Russia.
According to Bessonov, experts have developed an algorithm that creates a criminal profile. The system inputs data from crime scene investigations, victim characteristics, and descriptions of the crime (such as the type of attack, weapon used, and more). The software analyzes this information and generates the most accurate profile of the perpetrator within a few minutes. The age of the suspect can be determined with 80% accuracy, and the presence of mental disorders with 81.5% accuracy.
βWith approximately the same probability (82%), we can determine whether the perpetrator has a criminal record. We can also more precisely say whether the offender traveled by car or on foot, with a margin of error of only 10%. Additionally, we can establish with 96% accuracy whether the perpetrator knew the victim, which is crucial for further investigation,β Bessonov explained.
The development and testing of the software took three years. Bessonov also noted that specialists at the Research Institute of Forensic Science are currently working on another unique program that can determine, with an accuracy of up to one kilometer, how far a suspect lives from the crime scene.
