The Human Aura: An Introduction
So, let’s get started!
Theory
Let’s begin with the ever-popular Wikipedia:
- Biofield — a pseudoscientific concept that suggests there is a collection of “subtle” fields generated by living organisms or their organs; it’s often used to explain parapsychological phenomena.
- Human Aura — a manifestation of a person’s soul and spirit. The aura is not a physically existing object and, therefore, is not a subject of scientific study. However, the term is often used in various pseudoscientific fields, such as biofield theories, dowsing, or alternative medicine.
As you can see, these terms refer to the same thing, just wrapped in different packaging. Personally, I like Don Juan’s explanation from Carlos Castaneda’s books the most. According to Don Juan, a person is a glowing egg, but this glowing egg is not separated from the rest of the world. Through a bundle of luminous threads coming from the area of the stomach, each person is connected to everything in the world—to all the other energy fields that make up the universe. In this way, the world is energy, and humans are an inseparable part of it. (c)
You might ask, if we’re all connected and everything is energy, why can’t we see it? Well, that’s the thing!
Seriously though, the world around us—everything we see—is just an appearance. It’s a reflection of our own ideas about the world, not the world itself. That’s the accepted view, and it makes sense. Essentially, we only perceive a description of the world; we see what we’ve been taught to see. I even suspect that many people do see these fields, but since it’s not considered normal to talk about it, we stay silent—especially women, who tend to be more sensitive to such things.
From birth, we’re taught: this is a chair, that’s a table, this is the sky, that’s the sun, this is a tree, that’s a flower.
For 99.99% of people, if there’s no word for something, it doesn’t exist at all. (c) V. Pelevin, Batman Apollo
We see a tree and tell ourselves, “That’s a tree” (I mean this figuratively), and we don’t really look at it or see what it’s showing us—so how can we talk about auras? That’s how we end up living in a “familiar” world, where everything is already understood. The saddest part is that we treat people the same way—just as labels, in most cases.
Still, life is an amazing thing, full of surprises… And that’s wonderful! Can happiness ever be programmed, expected, or planned? No way… Oh, how boring our lives have become! We’ve lost our sense of adventure! We’ve stopped climbing through windows to see our loved ones; we’ve stopped doing big, beautiful, silly things… Ugh, what a drag, what a drag your jellied fish is! …
(From the movie “The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!”)
With this article, I want to show readers that the world is much more interesting than we’ve learned to see. It’s richer and more beautiful. There are so many fascinating things out there. That’s why I’m sharing a practice with you (thanks to Don Juan). Try it—turn off your skepticism and give it a shot. I promise you’ll be surprised. I’m not a Castaneda fanatic, but this is a really interesting thing. Just try it.
Practice: How to See Your Aura
First, a heads-up: after doing this practice, you might discover that you have the ability to “see auras.” You may realize you’ve seen them many times before, but just didn’t pay attention because those moments were so brief they slipped past your awareness.
- In a room without bright light (dim lighting is best), stretch your hand out in front of you and place your palm against a dark background.
- Look as if you’re gazing through your palm, focusing your eyes into the distance with a slightly unfocused, relaxed gaze.
- You might notice something like whitish rays coming from your fingers, or a whitish—or even colored—mist around your fingers, or a shadow repeating the outline of your fingers. This isn’t an optical illusion—this is the aura, or energy, as Don Juan calls it. At this moment, you’re seeing your aura through the outer world, through the appearance of things.
- Practice on yourself first, then try it with other people, and you’ll start to see their auras too.
This is one of those things people mean when they say, “I can see right through a person.” That’s exactly how you should look—not at the person, but through them. It’s very subtle, so don’t expect to see some fantastic glowing effects like in the movies. This is just an experiment with your consciousness, but it’s a truly fascinating one.
