Why Bank Card Thefts Happen in Russia: The Role of Trust

Bank Card Thefts in Russia Linked to Users’ Trust

According to Sberbank, the main reason why popular bank card fraud schemes have become so successful in Russia is the trustfulness of users. The financial institution reports that over 76% of fraudulent transactions occur because users simply trust too easily.

Many Russians end up revealing their PIN codes and other card details themselves, often in response to common scam messages about their card being blocked. Scammers frequently send these fake notifications at random—via email, messenger apps, or phone calls—hoping someone will respond.

Other Causes of Fraudulent Transactions

Sberbank also notes that 18% of illegal transactions are carried out using malicious software that steals payment information from mobile devices. This highlights the importance of protecting your devices and being cautious about what you download or click on.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Never share your payment information, including PIN codes, with anyone.
  • If you receive a message or call about your card being blocked, do not respond directly. Instead, call the official hotline number listed on your bank card to verify the information.
  • Be cautious of suspicious emails, messages, or phone calls, especially those asking for personal or financial information.
  • Keep your mobile devices secure and avoid installing unknown apps or clicking on suspicious links.

Recent Developments in Cybercrime

Last week, it was reported that Russian cybercriminal Alexander Vinnik, previously arrested in Greece, confessed to the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office to money laundering and fraud in Russia. Vinnik has submitted a written confession.

Additionally, Russian authorities have recently become more concerned about protecting citizens’ personal data from cybercriminals. As a result, new criminal penalties for digital identity theft may be introduced soon.
