Signal Messenger to Introduce Photo Anonymization Feature
The developers of the secure messaging app Signal have announced a new feature that will allow users to blur faces in photos. This update will be available in upcoming versions of Signal for both Android and iOS. The app will automatically detect and blur faces in images, but users will also have the option to manually blur parts of a photo before sending it.
This new feature is being developed to help protect protesters in the United States from being identified by law enforcement agencies. To ensure user privacy, all image processing is performed locally on the userβs device.
Previously, artist and programmer Everest Pipkin created a tool called Image Scrubber, which also helps users blur faces in photos. The program removes identifying metadata (Exif data) from images and allows users to selectively blur parts of a photo to hide faces and other identifiable information.
