Pavel Durov Recommends Deleting WhatsApp from Smartphones
The creator of the Telegram messenger, Pavel Durov, has urged users to delete WhatsApp from their devices due to multiple security vulnerabilities found in the app. Durov made this statement on Wednesday, highlighting ongoing concerns about user data privacy.
Security Vulnerabilities in WhatsApp
Durov pointed out that a new vulnerability was recently discovered in WhatsApp, allowing hackers and government agencies to access users’ personal information. He referenced his earlier prediction from May that security issues in WhatsApp would continue to emerge, with serious problems appearing one after another.
“If you don’t want all your photos and messages to become public one day, you should delete WhatsApp from your phone,” Durov wrote on his Telegram channel. He expressed doubt that the vulnerabilities were left in the app by accident, given that WhatsApp is owned by Facebook.
Recent Incident and Official Response
Durov’s post was a reaction to news about a newly discovered vulnerability in WhatsApp. Earlier, India’s CERT-In cybersecurity agency warned that attackers could remotely install spyware on a user’s device by sending an MP4 file through WhatsApp. Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, announced earlier this week that the vulnerability had been fixed in the latest version of the app. A company representative also stated that there was no evidence hackers had exploited the vulnerability.
