New Malware Targets Gamer Accounts on Steam, Epic Games, and EA Origin
A new malicious program is being sold on dark web forums, primarily used by cybercriminals to steal gamer accounts from popular platforms such as Steam, Epic Games Store, and EA Origin. Experts from Kaspersky Lab have reported on this intriguing malware sample.
The trojan, first discovered by researchers in March, has been named BloodyStealer. Its main purpose is to steal confidential information, including cookies, passwords, bank card details, and session data from various applications.
Focus on Popular Gaming Platforms
BloodyStealer is particularly interested in popular gaming platforms like Steam, Epic Games, EA Origin, GOG Galaxy, and others. All the collected account data is later sold by attackers on cybercriminal forums.
“It can’t be said that BloodyStealer was originally developed specifically to target gamers, but its use clearly shows the cybercriminal world’s interest in gamer account data,” Kaspersky Lab experts explain. “Logs, accounts, and even in-game valuables can easily be sold on hacker forums for a significant amount.”
Distribution and Features
BloodyStealer is sold through private channels and only to VIP members of certain forums. The malware costs $10 for a monthly subscription or $40 for a lifetime license.
Sellers also note that the trojan includes features to bypass detection by antivirus programs. BloodyStealer attacks are not limited to any one country, putting gamers worldwide at risk. A full analysis of the malware can be found in Kaspersky’s report.
