Mobile Networks Vulnerable: Criminals Can Intercept 9 Out of 10 SMS Messages
Experts from Positive Technologies have highlighted the insecurity of mobile networks and the risk of SMS message interception by cybercriminals. According to their research, 78% of networks worldwide are currently vulnerable to attacks, and messages can be intercepted in 9 out of 10 cases.
The issue lies in certain features of these networks that create loopholes for successful attacks. Even regular cybersecurity measures are often not enough to fully protect against these threats.
Cybercriminals can even purchase subscriptions on the dark web to receive and spoof other people’s SMS messages in real time. According to the company, this service costs about $20 per month.
Given that stolen bank card data can be bought on the dark web for as little as $9, and a one-time code for making a payment costs $250, criminals have a wide range of opportunities at their disposal.
βThere remains a significant risk of fraudulent operations today: 78% of networks are vulnerable. SMS interception is possible in 9 out of 10 cases,β the researchers concluded.
