Kaspersky Discovers 1,500 Phishing Sites Aimed at Crypto Investors
Experts from the antivirus company Kaspersky Lab have warned about a rise in scams targeting cryptocurrency investors. Since the beginning of 2021, specialists have identified more than 1,500 such fraudulent resources.
In addition, Kaspersky reported its successes: this year, the company has blocked over 70,000 attempts by users to access scam websites. Most often, cybercriminals create fake cryptocurrency exchange sites.
Scammers also frequently send notifications about fake sales of graphics cards and other equipment for mining digital currency. In these cases, victims are persuaded to purchase hardware, for which they are asked to pay in advance.
Criminals do not shy away from creating phishing pages designed to steal private keys, which provide access to all digital assets and crypto wallets. These web resources are usually hosted in popular domain zones such as .com, .net, .org, .info, or in cheaper zones like .site, .xyz, .online, .top, .club, and .live.
Kaspersky Lab noted the high level of detail found in these malicious sites, which distinguishes these cybercriminal campaigns. As an example, experts pointed out that real data from active cryptocurrency exchanges is often loaded onto these fake sites.
This is easily explained by the higher level of technical knowledge typically possessed by people interested in investing in digital currencies. Cybercriminals understand this and are constantly improving their techniques.
