Free Chrome Extension Checks If Your Passwords Have Been Compromised
In recent years, data breaches have affected billions of people worldwide. Just last year, the personal information of 1.4 billion users was leaked online. Hackers frequently steal passwords, security questions and answers, birth dates, and email addresses, making it increasingly difficult for users to know if their online identities are safe.
One of the key factors in protecting yourself from online threats is using a strong password that hasn’t been compromised in previous data leaks. To help with this, Okta has developed a free Chrome browser extension called PassProtect, which allows users to check if their passwords have been compromised.
This tool automatically compares your passwords against the Have I Been Pwned? database—a free service that lets you check if your credentials have been exposed in a breach. If the password you enter in PassProtect is found in the Have I Been Pwned? database, the extension will alert you that your credentials have been compromised. Additionally, PassProtect will warn you if your password is not strong enough or hasn’t been changed in a long time. The extension works automatically whenever you log in to an account.
