Fake Leather Wallet Stole Cryptocurrency on the App Store

Fake Leather Wallet Stole Cryptocurrency on the App Store

Developers of the Leather cryptocurrency wallet have reported the discovery of a fake version of their wallet in the Apple App Store. Users affected by the counterfeit app say it stole their digital assets.

Last week, the Leather team warned the community about the appearance of a fraudulent version of their wallet in the Apple App Store. They clarified that the company does not currently offer an iOS app, and the legitimate Leather wallet can only be downloaded from the official website (leather.io).

Leather representatives advised anyone who entered their secret recovery phrase into the fake app to immediately transfer their cryptocurrency to a new wallet. The recovery phrase was likely sent to scammers, giving them access to steal all funds.

Although Apple was notified about the fake app over a week ago, the counterfeit from developer LetalComRu remained available in the App Store for almost two weeks. According to social media reports, users were still losing money to the fake app as recently as yesterday. Only today did Apple remove the counterfeit from the store and revoke the developer’s access to the Apple Developer Program.

Details About the Fake App

According to Bleeping Computer, the fake app had a rating of 4.9 out of 5.0, although most reviews appeared to be fake, using random and similar names with nearly identical text.

Fake Reviews

Since the App Store does not provide download statistics, it is unknown how many people managed to download the cryptocurrency-stealing app.

This is not the first such incident, despite Apple’s security measures. For example, in February 2024, a fake version of the LastPass password manager was found in the App Store. That app appeared to be a phishing attempt designed to steal user credentials.

In the case of Leather, the creators of the fake app did not try to imitate the original but instead took advantage of the fact that the company did not have an official iOS app.
