Scammers and phishers have latched onto the topic of digital currency, with antivirus company Avast reporting a rise in fraudulent schemes in countries where cryptocurrency is gaining traction during the first half of 2021.
Most often, cybercriminals use phishing websites aimed at citizens of countries where digital currency is on the rise. Users in the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, India, Brazil, and Nigeria have been among the main targets.
How Scammers Operate
According to experts from Avast Threat Labs, who analyzed 37 malicious websites, these sites were disguised as legitimate custodial wallets. The main motivation for scammers has been the surge in Bitcoin’s popularity, and 2021 is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for digital currency overall.
Avast experts urge users to be aware of common scam tactics. Fraudsters may pretend to run giveaways from Elon Musk or promise to invest your money with huge monthly returns. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is a scam.
