Android Users Will See How Apps Use Their Data

The official Google Play Store for Android apps will soon introduce additional requirements for developers. Following Apple’s lead, Google will require developers to provide information about how user data is used.

As explained in a blog post by Suzanne Frey, who oversees Android security and privacy, these changes are designed to help users understand what data each app shares. “These new rules could be a significant step, so we’re notifying all developers in advance about the upcoming changes. Android mobile device users will be able to learn how well their data is protected and gain a more complete understanding of the level of security and privacy,” Frey wrote.

Google plans to provide all necessary requirements to developers this summer. Starting in the second quarter of 2022, Android app creators will be required to include information about how they use smartphone owners’ data. The steps are outlined in the infographic below:

  • Developers (including Google itself) will need to clearly describe how they handle the following types of information: user geolocation, contacts, personal data, and more.

“If we find that a developer is misrepresenting the information provided and thereby violating the official app store’s policy, we will require them to fix it immediately,” Frey added.
