NLP: Reframing Explained – Types, Examples, and Communication Benefits

NLP: Reframing

Reframing is the process of changing the frame around a statement to give it a different meaning. In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), reframing is a powerful communication tool that helps shift perspectives and experiences.

Main Types of Reframing

  1. Context Reframing (when the same event, placed in different contexts, takes on different meanings). For example, if it’s raining, people who came to the seaside for a summer vacation might say, “The weather is bad today.” But a farmer about the same rain would say, “It’s great that it’s raining. There will be a good harvest.”

The rain itself doesn’t carry a positive or negative meaning. The frame changes. In one situation (a beach vacation), rain is bad. In another (a long drought in the fields), rain is good.

  2. Content Reframing (when an event is renamed, it changes its meaning).Examples of content reframing include:
    • We’re not retreating, we’re just realigning the front line.
    • This isn’t a defeat, it’s just another life lesson.
    • This isn’t a problem, it’s a challenge to solve.
    • He’s not fat, he’s big and kind, etc.

The Power of Reframing in Communication

Reframing is a very powerful communication tool. In general communication theory, there’s a basic axiom: a message only has meaning in the context in which it appears. Effective reframing leads to a change in how an experience is perceived.

Sometimes, when dealing with objections, it’s helpful to rename something or highlight its advantages in a different context. This allows your counterpart to see your proposal, product, or service from a new perspective.

Examples of Reframing

  • Example 1
    – I think this carpet is very bright.
    – It’s not bright. It’s cheerful. It lifts your mood and creates a festive atmosphere. (Content reframing.)
  • Example 2
    – The bedroom windows face east. There’s not much light.
    – That’s actually great for our southern city. In summer, you’ll have sun only in the morning, and by noon and evening, when it’s hot outside, your room will always be cool. (Context reframing.)
  • Example 3
    – This dress is too revealing and provocative.
    – It’s not provocative, it’s extravagant and attention-grabbing. A woman in such a dress inspires admiration. (Content reframing.)
