NLP: Future Construction Technique
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Decide what you want (in terms of values, criteria, and significant states).
- Imagine your ideal self-image β the version of yourself that embodies all these important states and values, the person you want to become by the end of your life, many years from now. Let this be an ideal and even unattainable image for your present self. This is the version of you that makes life worth living and is perfect!
Visualize this self either sensorially (as an image of yourself) and/or submodally-metaphorically (for example, as a glowing being, where the qualities of the glow represent those significant states). - Consider the full ecology β add all the important, useful, and valuable states from your present and past, ensuring you can move between any of these states, combine them, and have them all expressed together in a unified self-image and self-voice.
- Associate yourself with this image β feel this self with your whole body. Truly associate! This is a key moment.
- While staying in this future state, look back to the distant past (for example, to the year 2007) and establish a connection with your present self. Heart to heart, breath to breath, with your whole body. Give advice from that future perspective.
- Return to the present, feel the connection, accept all the advice. Have a conversation. You can finish here as a basic future-building format.
- Visualize your self-image and self-voice in the present (dissociated, out of context). Recognize your current beliefs, limitations, and stereotypes that differ from your ideal self and prevent you from becoming that person.
Next, as in the new behavior generator, imagine (dissociated, out of context) how your present self-image, inspired and motivated by your future self, moves toward that future and changes, becoming more and more like it. As you get closer, both submodally and externally, you become almost identical. When you are like two peas in a pod with your ideal self, step into it, merge, and remain as a single “self-image/self-voice.”
Review this path several times.
In the same way, transform all your protesting parts into self-images and integrate (grow, transform) them into your unified ideal self. In the end, only a single “I” remains. - Associate with this future and live it from the future to the present, creating a synesthesia (sensations, images, sounds). You can do this semi-unconsciously. You donβt have to be aware of all the images, but you must feel the sensation. Repeat several times until the feeling becomes stable.
If the sensation is not present throughout your whole body, grow and integrate it until you become it completely. - Live through the movie from the present to the future. Repeat several times.
- Absorb all these movies into yourself. Integrate them throughout your whole body.
