Tails 5.21 and Tor Browser 13.0.8 Released: Key Updates and Fixes

Tails 5.21 and Tor Browser 13.0.8 Released

The release of the specialized Linux distribution Tails 5.21 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) has been announced. Tails is based on Debian and is designed for anonymous internet access. Anonymity in Tails is provided by the Tor network, and all connections except those routed through Tor are blocked by default using a packet filter. User data persistence between sessions is protected with encryption. The new version is available as a 1 GB ISO image that can be run in Live mode.

What’s New in Tails 5.21

  • A warning is now displayed with an option to send a diagnostic report if an error occurs while resizing the system partition during the first boot.
  • The navigation panel now shows the date in a localized format.
  • Tor Browser has been updated to version 13.0.7, and the Tor toolkit to 0.4.8.10.
  • Issues causing the browser to crash when clicking the UBlock icon have been fixed.
  • Time synchronization reliability has been improved.
  • Backup creation features in Tails Cloner have been enhanced.

Tor Browser 13.0.8 Update

Following the release of Tor Browser 13.0.7, which is included in Tails 5.21, a corrective update Tor Browser 13.0.8 has been released. This update fixes a bug that caused the Tor pluggable transports component to crash on Windows 7. The issue was due to compatibility problems with Windows 7 in Go 1.21. To resolve this, Go 1.20 is now used to build the lyrebird, conjure, and webtunnel transports. However, the snowflake transport still requires Go 1.21 and remains unavailable on Windows 7. Support for Windows 7 and 8 will be discontinued after Tor Browser transitions to the Firefox 128 codebase next year.

Additional Updates in Tor Browser 13.0.7

  • Synchronized with the Firefox 115.6 ESR codebase, which addresses 19 security vulnerabilities.
  • Tor updated to version 0.4.8.10.
  • NoScript extension updated to version 11.4.29.
