Kali Linux 2021.4: New Social Engineering Toolkit and Enhanced Features

Offensive Security has released a new version of Kali Linux, numbered 2021.4. According to the release notes, this update brings several improvements: better compatibility with Samba, the ability to switch package manager mirrors, enhanced support for Apple M1, and more.

Improved Samba Compatibility

With improved Samba compatibility, Kali Linux 2021.4 can now connect to almost any existing Samba server, regardless of the protocol version used. In other words, penetration testers can now more easily identify vulnerable Samba servers β€œout of the box” without needing to configure Kali further.

Kaboxer Updates

The Kaboxer tool also received updates, mainly cosmetic: it now supports window and icon themes. This allows the program to integrate more smoothly with the desktop environment. For example, the appearance of Kaboxer now matches the rest of the desktop more closely.

New Tools in Kali Linux 2021.4

The latest version of this well-known distribution introduces several new tools, including:

  • Dufflebag – Searches for secrets in public EBS volumes
  • Maryam – An open-source OSINT framework
  • Name-That-Hash – Identifies hash types
  • Proxmark3 – Used for probing Proxmark3 and RFID for vulnerabilities
  • S3Scanner – Scans the internet for open S3 buckets
  • Spraykatz – Automates the extraction of credentials by parsing the lsass process
  • truffleHog – Searches for secrets and strings in git repositories

Social-Engineer Toolkit in NetHunter

The NetHunter app now includes the β€œSocial-Engineer Toolkit.” Kali NetHunter can be used to customize email notifications for receiving private messages on platforms like Facebook, Messenger, or Twitter.
