First Jailbreak Tool Released for iPhone X
Developer Jonathan Levin has released a tool called LiberiOS, which allows users to jailbreak the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and other 64-bit Apple mobile devices, according to Redmond Pie. This is the first public jailbreak tool released since the debut of iOS 11 in September of this year.
Supported Devices and iOS Versions
LiberiOS is compatible with all iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch models running iOS 11 through iOS 11.1.2. It does not support earlier or later versions of iOS. The tool is based on a proof-of-concept exploit for a vulnerability discovered by Google security researcher Ian Beer.
Background and Purpose
In mid-December, Ian Beer released an exploit that allows security researchers to jailbreak iOS 11.1.2. According to Apple representatives, the purpose of publishing this tool was to give experts the opportunity to study iOS security without having to develop their own exploits.
Limitations of the Jailbreak
Currently, the jailbreak is considered “temporary” because the procedure must be repeated after each device reboot.
Related Security Research
Previously, experts from the Vietnamese company Bkav demonstrated a method to bypass the Face ID biometric identification system on the iPhone X using a specially created mask.
What Is Jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is an unofficial procedure not supported by Apple that allows users to access the file system of certain iPhone, iPod, or iPad models.
