Summary Table of Substrate Properties

A good substrate should have the following properties at the same time:

  • Be well-aerated
  • Retain and preserve moisture wellβ€”in other words, absorb water and release it to the plant as needed

You can buy ready-made substrate in specialized stores or make it yourself. For beginners, it is recommended to use pre-made mixes, as they contain all the necessary components, have a balanced pH, and are enriched with all essential nutrients.

Note that the lower the overall nutrient content in the various components of the substrate, the more frequently you will need to fertilize.

By using the table below, you can create your own substrate, taking into account the specific properties you need.
