Seed Germination: The Sanchez Method

Seed Germination: The Sanchez Method

December 06, 2017

What You’ll Need

  • Seeds
  • Two large kitchen sponges
  • Zip-lock bag
  • A glass of clean water
  • Steady hands

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Arrange the Seeds: Place the seeds on one of the sponges, spreading them evenly in the center.
  2. Cover with the Second Sponge: Gently place the second sponge on top of the seeds.
  3. Moisten the Sponges: Pour about 100 ml (a little less than half a cup) of water over the sponges, allowing the water to soak through both layers evenly.
  4. Prepare the Bag: Take the “sandwich” of sponges and seeds and place it into a zip-lock bag. If you don’t have a zip-lock, a regular plastic bag will work, but a zip-lock is preferred for a tighter seal.
  5. Add Oxygen: Before sealing the bag, take a deep breath and gently exhale some air into the bag. This will provide enough oxygen for the seeds inside.
  6. Store in a Warm, Dark Place: Put the sealed bag in a dark, warm spot for 12 to 24 hours.
  7. Check the Results: After 24 hours, you should see results! In this example, all five seeds sprouted within 24 hours.
