US Patent Granted for Cannabis-Based Snuff
The global cannabis industry may soon see the introduction of a new product format: moist snuff made from cannabis, similar to the well-known tobacco product snus. A US-based cannabis company has already been granted a patent for this innovation. This form of cannabis allows for the regulation of cannabinoid and terpene levels, and its effects are expected to be felt more quickly than those of cannabis edibles.
Yesterday, the United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a notice of allowance for a patent on “moist cannabis-based snuff” to Resurgent Biosciences, a subsidiary of the science-focused holding company Goodness Growth. The patent covers both the product format itself and the manufacturing process.
“Obtaining this patent highlights the quality and strength of our team’s innovations and aligns with our long-term strategy to develop intellectual property while simultaneously disrupting the tobacco industry with safer cannabis-based alternatives,” said Kyle Kingsley, CEO of Resurgent Biosciences.
With this patent, the company will be able to commercialize a new form factor for cannabis products, which is an analog to moist tobacco (better known in Russia as snus), a product that has already proven its appeal in the multi-billion-dollar tobacco industry. Of course, the new product will contain no tobacco. In the near future, Resurgent Biosciences and other licensed cannabis companies will begin producing this new product.
According to Resurgent Biosciences, this form of cannabis will offer higher bioavailability than edibles, but slower onset than traditional smoking products. The moist cannabis snuff can be produced with various compositions—ranging from cannabinoid-free to different levels of THC, CBD, CBN, and others. Manufacturers will also be able to customize the terpene profile of their products.
The company reports that cannabis snuff will be suitable not only for recreational users but also for medical patients.
