The Dark Side of CBD
There is a wealth of research providing information about the beneficial properties of cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. However, not every claim printed on CBD product packaging should be taken at face value.
In the United States, CBD exists in a regulatory “gray area.” This means it is legal, but not overseen by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In Russia, the situation is similar: CBD products are not considered medicines and are also not properly regulated. As a result, manufacturers often do not adhere to specific standards, leading to the release of low-quality products.
In the U.S., only 7% of CBD manufacturers test their products for purity and potency. Some products may contain pesticides and heavy metals. According to a Leafly study, nearly half of the brands tested contained incorrect amounts of CBD compared to what was stated on the label. Another study found high levels of THC in some products.
No such studies have been conducted in Russia. Therefore, before purchasing a CBD product, pay attention to the following points:
- The packaging should indicate the amount of CBD.
- The manufacturer’s website should provide information about product certification.
- Choose manufacturers that use organic production methods.
- Read reviews from other customers.
