Cannabis Cafes and Restaurants Open in Thailand
In Bangkok, new establishments are opening where cannabis is the main ingredient. Recently, a bar opened in the Thai capital offering guests drinks and desserts infused with cannabis. Thanks to the partial legalization of cannabis, local entrepreneurs can now make this plant a part of everyday life in Thailand. The use of cannabis is now available to licensed companies, allowing for the opening of various themed venues such as cafes and restaurants.
First Cannabis Cafes and Bars in Thailand
The first cannabis cafe in Thailand, “Taste of Ganja,” was opened in Prachinburi, and recently, the “420 Cannabis Bar” opened in Bangkok. The dessert shop “Kanom Siam” has also started adding cannabis to its pandan and coconut pancakes.
Government Support and Regulations
The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine even encourages the public to use cannabis, as long as it contains very little of the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The plant’s flowers remain prohibited.
How Cannabis Is Used in Thai Cafes
Most often, Thais use cannabis leaves as a base, since they contain very little THC. For example, at “Taste of Ganja,” guests can try deep-fried cannabis leaves, as well as fried meat with basil and cannabis leaves.
At the “420 Cannabis Bar,” guests are offered drinks and desserts with added CBD. Prices range from 125 baht (about $3.60) to 145 baht (about $4.20). The bar also offers Fly High Cookies and Happy Brownies for 180 baht (about $5.20).
About the Establishments
The neon-lit venue features a bar counter with high stools. The cafe was opened by three friends, who assure that they use only legal cannabis obtained in accordance with the law. The cannabis is supplied by a licensed cannabis farm from Nakhon Ratchasima province.
Legalization and Industry Growth
Since December 9, 2020, most parts of the cannabis plant have been decriminalized in Thailand, except for the flowers. These parts can be used by individuals or commercial organizations that have received a license from the Ministry of Health. Authorities believe this will stimulate the development of the cannabis industry in Thailand.
