US DEA Plans to Burn Seized Marijuana Evidence in Texas

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has announced plans to destroy marijuana that is currently being held as physical evidence. According to a report by Fox 13, the agency is seeking a contractor in the state of Texas to handle the destruction of these materials.

The selected company must be capable of processing up to 1,000 pounds (453.6 kilograms) of marijuana per hour, for eight hours a day. The incineration facility will be surrounded by a fence high enough to prevent people from seeing what is happening inside, as stated in the DEA’s announcement.

Additionally, the contractor’s site will be equipped with video surveillance, and all employees will be required to undergo annual drug testing.

Currently, recreational use of marijuana is fully legal in nine US states and in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. However, under federal law, marijuana remains classified as a prohibited substance, and possession of even small amounts is illegal.
