Thailand Prepares New Cannabis Legislation

According to a new draft law, medications made from cannabis will become widely available, and anyone with government permission will be able to grow cannabis both for medical purposes and as a commercial crop.

Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on Monday that the new narcotics law, which includes guidelines for the medical use of cannabis, will soon be reviewed by parliament. This will allow patients and investors to obtain state approval to cultivate cannabis for medical purposes.

At a seminar on medical cannabis held on Monday, Mr. Anutin pledged to continue promoting hemp and cannabis as new cash crops for the country. He stated that the governmentโ€™s policy on cannabis, marijuana, and other herbs is focused on developing them as medicines, creating economic opportunities, and establishing mechanisms to prevent negative impacts on society.

The Minister of Public Health said he has instructed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to speed up the process of ensuring broad access to hemp- and cannabis-based medicines without violating any laws. The administration has submitted a revised draft of the Narcotics Act to the State Council for review. Once completed, the draft will be sent to the House of Representatives and parliament for approval and implementation.

The new narcotics law will allow anyone with FDA permission to grow cannabis at home, both for medical use and as a commercial crop. According to the minister, the content of the bill is much more liberal than what his party advocated for in the last election.
