MJ Is 114 Times Less Toxic Than Alcohol, Study Finds

MJ Is 114 Times Less Toxic Than Alcohol, According to Scientific Reports

The latest issue of Scientific Reports published a ranking of the toxicity of various recreational substances for the human body. It probably comes as no surprise that MJ ranks at the very bottom of the list. What may surprise many, however, is that alcohol was found to be the most toxic substance for the body.

Researchers determined that MJ is 114 times less neurotoxic than alcohol when calculating the overall toxicity of the substance and the standard dosage typically consumed. Alcohol, along with nicotine and heroin, was placed in the “high-risk group” in this ranking, while ecstasy and methamphetamine were classified as “medium-risk.” This information supports the results of previous studies that used different parameters to assess the toxicity of recreational substances.

Comparison with the U.S. Controlled Substances List

When comparing this ranking to the U.S. Controlled Substances List, a clear contrast becomes apparent. In this list, MJ is classified as a Schedule I substance, alongside heroin and ecstasy. Schedule I substances are those considered to have no accepted medical use and a high potential for harm. Schedule II includes cocaine, methamphetamine, and various opioid painkillers, which have recognized medical uses but also a high potential for dependence.

Interestingly, the list does not mention the toxicity of tobacco or alcohol at all.

Scientific Evidence and Changing Attitudes

Now, science provides clear and transparent facts. We have empirical evidence showing that MJ is less dangerous to the body than alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational substances. Additionally, medical professionals are discovering more and more ways to use MJ for medical purposes every day. Even politicians are beginning to doubt the idea that MJ is a dangerous drug with no medical value, and many actively support MJ reform. Support for legalization is growing worldwide, and it is quite possible that legalization is just around the corner.
