California to Consider Bill Legalizing Marijuana Delivery Services

California to Consider Bill Legalizing Marijuana Delivery Services

Currently, the state of California is facing challenges in opening up the recreational marijuana market, as many municipalities within the state have decided to restrict marijuana business activities in their jurisdictions. Although, at the end of 2016, state voters approved a law fully legalizing marijuana through a public referendum, legal marijuana is still unavailable in most of the region. This is because many local authorities have used their right to self-governance, granted by law, to completely ban the production and distribution of marijuana in their areas.

Fortunately for residents, the California Senate is now considering a bill to legalize home delivery services for marijuana. Lawmakers hope to use this new service model to effectively bypass municipal restrictions on marijuana distribution. It’s worth noting that currently, at least 60% of California’s territory consists of counties and cities that have chosen to strictly prohibit the production and distribution of marijuana. Therefore, passing this new law is crucial for the continued growth and development of the state’s legal marijuana market.

The existing law also allows cities to adopt new restrictions on regulating the marijuana market at the local level. As a result, it’s possible that if the bill passes, prohibitionists may respond by introducing new limits on the reach of delivery services.

The sponsor of this bill, numbered 1302, is Senator Ricardo Lara, a member of the Democratic Party. According to the bill, companies would be able to obtain a special license allowing them to legally deliver both recreational and medical marijuana directly to customers’ homes.

Other sponsors of the bill include the private company WeDrop and the public organization “Americans for Safe Access.” It is expected that the bill will be approved by the Senate and sent to the governor for signing by the end of this week.
