Yesterday, the media reported that the Military Investigative Committee announced a tender to purchase a “Magic Cube,” which will be used to solve crimes in the Central and Eastern Military Districts.

Let’s take a closer look at what this device is all about.

This system is a compact suitcase weighing about 4.5 kg, designed to quickly extract information from devices needed to identify the owner, including their name, email address, and messenger correspondence. The system supports around 3,000 phone models and can also work with flash drives and hard drives.

What Can the Magic Cube Do?

  • Search, analyze, and decode messages from dozens of major messengers: Telegram, Viber, WhatsApp, WeChat, Line, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, and more

It’s important to note that the manufacturer specifically mentions support for iOS only up to version 11.1.2, since newer versions have implemented features to prevent password brute-forcing.

Regarding Telegram, it should be clarified that secret chats cannot be “opened” either.

Conclusions

  • Do not use Android devices — they are absolutely insecure in many ways.
  • Update iOS to the latest version, and even better, upgrade your phone to the newest models (8, X), since similar systems can unlock Apple devices depending on the processor type, not just the OS version.
  • Another important tip: avoid using Touch ID for unlocking, as your finger can be used against your will in certain situations.
